The VLT 2800 general purpose frequency drive from Danfoss is well established in many markets around the globe and used in conveyors, mixers, packaging systems, pumps, fans and compressors. Now Danfoss has announced that with the launch of the new VLT FC 280 they are planning to replace VLT 2800 mid-term.Â
Like every phase-out of an established range I can imagine that this information has triggered the alarm bells especially of the maintenance engineers and OEMs which are using the VLT 2800 in their existing designs. However, in the information I found from Danfoss on the Internet it looks like that one of their primary goals was to make the replacement of VLT 2800 as easy as possible. Same dimensions, cable plugs, cable lengths and set-up software tools enable easy retrofit in established plant or machinery concepts.
The video below shows simplistically what Danfoss considered when they designed the VLT FC 280 to allow for easy replacement.Â
Â
Even though the Danfoss engineers followed the principle of easy retrofit for the VLT 2800, the new VLT FC 280 has some very interesting features, which makes the product suitable for most automation and machine-building applications in food and beverage, material handling and processing industries.
What's more, the VLT FC 280 has integrated functionality such as; DC chokes, RFI filters, Safe Torque Off (STO) and brake choppers but still comes in the same compact housing of its predecessor.

VLT FC 280 is available as 1-phase and 3-phase units from 0.37kW up to 22kW.Â
