Variable Capacitor Suits Mixed NFC Specifications

In recent years, near field communications (NFC) technology, which operates at frequencies of about 13.56MHz, has been introduced in wider product markets, including tablets, personal computers, wearable devices, and POS besides compact mobile devices such as smartphones.

Furthermore, numerous NFC communication standards, which vary in accordance with the application and the place where the product will be made available, have been launched with varying optimal resonance frequency range depending on the protocol. The optimal resonance frequency range also differs in relation to the NFC’s function, such as card emulation and reader/writer functions. In addition, it is necessary to consider various inductance values of NFC antennas. Because of such reasons, growing demand for resonance frequency matching devices that would enable products to easily implement NFC functions, have been observed.

To meet the abovementioned market needs, Murata Manufacturing, Co, Ltd, has introduced to the market a thin-film variable capacitor (Fig. 1) that can control capacitance using control voltage. To develop this variable capacitor, Murata has taken full advantage of its proprietary capacitor and thin-film micro-fabrication technologies, which the company has nurtured over the years.
