Understanding Clock Management Design

Clock management for an electronic system involves understanding and optimising the design to meet all of the accuracy requirements throughout the system.

Why is Clock management needed? Clocks are used in nearly every automated system where measurement, communication and interactions are required. They have formed the starting points for travel and moved on to the heart of our modern electronic control systems. As the systems have got more complex the accuracy requirements have increased. It is now important that the timing source is very accurate and stable but also that this stability is maximised throughout the complete electronic system that this clock is used in.

A typical systems will consist of :-

    Clock generator

    Clock distribution

    Interconnection /Back plane

    Additional clock distribution

    End devices

A central clock generator is used this is distributed using circuits, back planes and additional distribution circuits to reach the end devices. These will typically be CPU’s, ASIC’s, FPGA’s, Memory etc.
