Electronic systems are becoming all pervasive in the World around us, and the IoT is placing new and diverse demands on engineers from the younger and more mobile R&D team rattling around at HQ, to the field based maintenance engineer who is expected to turn up a fix any problem on the spot.

While in the software development department prototype platforms can be networked (using tools like the Segger “J Link Pro” RS Stock No (131-1324) allowing instant access by software teams spread across the Globe, the production, and maintenance engineers face the daunting task of being able to access software library databases of every variant of their companies increasingly complex products, and be able to test, update, or reprogram, on the production line or in the field. With just a couple of cables, and the latest Flasher Portable PLUS, the intrepid engineering hero can upgrade or repair software on the vast majority of the Worlds microcontrollers based on ARM, Cortex, PowerPC and Renesas RX processors irrespective of the target system having embedded or external Flash memories. The internet of things will increasingly be driving new remote nodes and equipment such as smart meters, and everything from domestic boilers, to telecom networks, office equipment, and remote data sensors and controllers for environmental or industrial monitoring and control applications. Servicing and field upgrade requirements will inevitably grow alongside the IoT despite the drive for over the network upgrade capabilities.

The Flasher Portable PLUS RS stock No (136-7686) allows multiple product image files to be stored, so one unit can be set up for different end product models, increasing the speed and efficiency of engineers in the field. Stand-alone mode is enabled from a windows PC via the Segger J-Flash software, and the correct image selected by a button and confirmed via a 1.8in LCD panel for display of programming status.  An authorised flashing feature also protects the Flasher against non-authorized access in case of external production, tampering, or errors.

The original portable Flasher in the Segger range has recently been replaced by RS Components as part of a drive to increase the support for its customer’s R&D needs and build on the tools and features within the Design Spark ecosystem. As a regular user you will know Design Spark includes the mutual support of >560,000 users, free PCB and mechanical CAD tools, and 3D models, as well as our new Obsolescence manager to help de-risk production BOMs. All of which combines with OEM development kits and products from suppliers like Segger to save time and money for R&D Departments for your Design Spark community. The powerful alignment of Design Spark, with the on line Electronics and MRO offer from over 2500 suppliers available via RS Components, provides an unrivalled “one stop R&D shop” for over a million Global customers.
