15W - Practical DC-DC Design 12Vin to 5V output in 3.3mm x 3.3mm x 1.5mm height

Very common for industrial and communication applications using 12V DC bus voltages to produce downstream system voltages from 12Vin to 5.0V and 3.3V. 15W high density, detailed, practical DC-DC for 12Vin to 5.0Vout design attached.

Parts list

Qty Product Part number
1 Non-Isolated DC-DC Converter, 4A 210-8770
1 FS1403 evaluation board 12Vin to 5Vout EV1403-3300

Practical design for 12V to 5V designs using FS1403-5000 (210-8767) , common in industrial and communications applications.   RS Components carries the FS1404 (210-8770) at 3.3V.  But FS1403 (210-8767)  is also available, these high-density power modules contain the DC-DC regulator + FETs + driver + thin film inductor, just add input/output caps, i.e. 2 x 22uF for a tight PCB footprint is practical for 7mm x 7mm with the caps or less.

The design delivers 15W at 5V output with excellent thermal deratings without airflow at higher temperatures of competing power modules and are also excellent for low height profile application since the overall height of the FS1403 is only a mere 1.5mm height including the thin film inductor. Overall specification:

  • 3A / 15W
  • 2Vin to 3.3Vout at 93% efficiency all losses included
  • Excellent EMI CISPR11 performance.
  • Passed vibration 10G multi-axis and drop test 51G.

Schematics, minimal BoM components and details design performance attached.  EV1403-5000  (210-8763) is the evaluation board for lab evaluation. Best in class in power density, size and performance.
