RL78/L1A Group Won the ECN IMPACT Awards 2017

Our RL78/L1A group of microcontrollers with built-in precise bio-sensing front ends for healthcare applications has been honored with the IMPACT Awards 2017 sponsored by Electronic Component News (ECN).

AWARDS2_e8fe39faf4e2a005c843765b5390914c2fb39ec4.pngECN is the world's most prestigious media for introducing the latest OEM products, tools, and technologies as well as trends and design intelligence for global engineering communities across a wide range of end markets including military and defense, medical, avionics and aerospace, industrial, automotive, wireless, computer, and consumer products.

The "ECN IMPACT Awards 2017" celebrates new technologies that have made the most excelling innovative and useful contributions in the design and engineering industries. Experts active at the vanguard of their industrial fields select the technologies with the most valuable contributions to their industries.

This year, the RL78/L1A group won the third prize in the Medical Device Design category based on jurors' high regard for the contributions to the diffusion of personal health equipment through the active use of the Renesas MCU design know-how such as ultra low power and analog technologies.

RL78/L1A group

The RL78/L1A is a low-power 16-bit microcontroller with LCD driver that is ideal for battery-powered sensing devices used in healthcare applications such as blood glucose monitors, lactate analyzers, cholesterol analyzers, and other devices equipped with biochemical sensors.

< Key features >

  • Low standby power dissipation

Extends the battery life of healthcare equipment routinely left on stand-by for long periods of time (Halt mode with RTC power draw of 1 uA or less)

  • Low voltage operation

Low voltage operation while maintaining analog function characteristics (Conventional products 2.4 V → 2.2 V)

  • Integration of peripheral equipment

In addition to digital functions, operational amplifier, 12-bit A/D converters, 12-bit D/A converters, and analog-switch current-voltage conversion circuit are incorporated

With the built-in analog front-end circuit for biochemical sensing, the RL78/L1A enables blood glucose and hemoglobin measurements with only one monitoring device. The RL78/L1A also delivers improved performance with high-precision analog functions as well as longer battery life. System designers therefore can leverage the low-power and improved precision analog of RL78/L1A MCUs to create compact and lighter medical devices with extended battery life, which can help patients manage health conditions, such as diabetes, more effectively.

In the one year since its release in 2016, the product has been adopted by more than ten corporate customers located mostly in Asia and the US.
