Started as a Kickstarter project the OpenScope MZ is a real Gem. The OpenScope MZ combines 2 Channel Oscilloscope, 12 bit 1hz to1Mhz Function Generator, Digital I/O, and dual DC Power Supplies into a really neat multi-function instrument that can be used via USB UART to your computer, or your mobile infrastructure via wifi.

If you need to retrieve data from sensors, and other electronic devices for storage and analysis OpenScope MZ makes it easy, and it’s on board oscilloscope then allows for visualisation to accelerate develop and debug circuits faster.

The instrument is also equipped to generate analogue and digital signals using the power supply, function generator and GPIO allowing for design stimulation and response for both analogue and digital signals via the oscilloscope and on board logic analyser.

Ideal for working both on the bench and on location, due to the ability to run from a laptop, this neat little device can also be integrated and left in situ either permanently as a service monitor, or temporarily for a period of data logging service and system optimisation.

Before you start thinking this is sounding expensive, think again. !
Based on a Microchip 32bit PIC microcontroller, this little beauty was designed for those of us with the budgets of mortal men, and even comes complete with 30 way Header connector with a birds nest an avian would be proud of.

So now you’re thinking you need a get a bunch of expensive accessories or software? Wrong again !
The Openscope MZ is completely open source, for both hardware and software (via www.waveformslive.com). You will need a PC USB to connect it to just to give the FTDI RS232 chip something to do, and if you want to use data storage / logging, you’ll need a mini SD card.

Here at DesignSpark, we like to challenge the community to see “How much you can do in a Day”, so check out this Utube Intro  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=f0wYoZCmIHY  and then to find out how fast, and for how little, you can get your hands on the OpenScope MZ (Digilent Mfr. Part No. 410-324) click through to RS Stock No. (146-5600)

Key Features:

  • 2 scope channels with 12 bits at 2MHz bandwidth and 6.25 MS/s max sampling rate
·1 function generator output with 1MHz bandwidth at 10 MS/s update rate
·10 user programmable DIO pins with 25MHz update rates
·User programmable power supplies supplying up to 50mA and ± 4V power
·USB bus powered or externally powered
    ·On-board WiFi
    ·Browser-based WaveForms Live multi-instrument software
·Re-programmable through Arduino IDE or Microchip MPLAB X IDE

Now you’ve got yours on order, here’s how it gets really easy to understand and use the OpenScope MZ, because of the fact that the resources are all fully open and available from Digilent, and
