ROHM’s BM92AxxMWV-EVK-01 series integrates ROHM's USB PD controller IC that supports the USB Type-C Rev1.1 and USBPD Rev2.0 standards for connecting with USB Type-C devices. ROHM leveraged leading BiCDMOS processes and circuit technology to develop USB PD controller ICs that are expected to provide greater convenience while significantly reducing industrial waste. The initial launch will consist of six boards in a mix of both receiver and transmitter types to meet the needs of a variety of applications. Users can combine receiver and transmitter boards to easily achieve and evaluate USB PD operation.

BM92AxxMWV Series Features

ROHM's BM92AxxMWV series of power receiving controller ICs support the latest USB Power Delivery (USBPD) protocol with the USB Type-Câ„¢ connector. Compatibility with USB Type-Câ„¢ Rev1.1 and USBPD Rev2.0 makes it possible to supply up to 100W (20V/5A) between USB Type-Câ„¢ devices that up to now were limited to 7.5W. As a result, even devices with larger power requirements such as notebook PCs and TVs can be powered from a USB Type-C port. And for conventional USB equipped applications (i.e. smartphones, tablets) faster charging is enabled. In addition, functional optimization and miniaturization are achieved by leveraging advanced micro 0.13um BiCDMOS and high voltage processes along with circuit technology.

USB Power Delivery utilizes a private line separate from the data line

A max. of 100W can be transmitted through the USB Type-Câ„¢ connector. Connected devices automatically enter into a power contract after detecting requirements to supply optimum power between 7.5W (5V/1.5A) and 100W (20V/5A). In addition, bidirectional power supply is possible, with the source and receiver switching sides. And by switching to 27W (9V/3A) supply smaller devices without large power requirements such as smartphone and tablets can be charged up to 4x faster than conventional USB1.2 (5V/1.5A).

DisplayPortâ„¢ Alternate Mode compatibility eliminates the need for separate dedicated video cables.

Support for DisplayPortâ„¢ Alternate Mode is also provided for carrying video signals over USB. The capability to deliver high-speed data, video, and an unprecedented amount of power over a single cable represents a breakthrough achievement that is expected to improve convenience while minimizing clutter and waste.

Configurable using the fewest number of external parts in the industry (a ROHM advantage)

Advanced 0.13um BiCDMOS processes and circuit technology make it possible to eliminate the FET and separate power supply for power receiving operation. This reduces the number of external parts by more than 20 (including the external power supply IC), contributing to greater miniaturization.

Appendix: What is USB Power Delivery?

USB Power Delivery (USB PD) is a new standard that expands the power supply capabilities of USB 2.0 and USB 3.1. Power supply up to 100W is achieved using the Type-Câ„¢ connector, making it possible to power to devices that could not be driven by conventional USB, such as notebook PCs, while enabling quick charge (shortened charge times) of mobile devices.
USB
PD communication is carried out between 2 connected devices and the optimum voltage and current automatically determined after negotiating a power delivery contract. Communication is implemented on the newly established dedicated CC line that allows it to function independently of conventional USB communication. And support for Alternate-Mode control is provided for handling video signals, eliminating the need to mount a dedicated video port in notebook PCs and other devices.
In short, this new standard is capable of transmitting power, data, and video signals using a single cable, delivering unprecedented convenience and ease-of-use while contributing to environmental conservation by eliminating the need for dedicated wires for power and video.
