Designing 15W High Density 12Vin to 3.3Vout - 4A DC-DC solution in smallest PCB footprint

This project provides a detail practical design for a high current density 12Vin to 3.3Vout DC-DC design using TDK micro-POL Chip Embedded Power Modules. Total design with FS1404-3300-AS (3.3V module) with output caps in 7mm x 7mm delivering 13W+.

System voltage supplies are very common for 3.3V, 5.0V from a 12Vinput bus rail, this project provides a practical design using TDK micro-POL chip embedded power modules in the small PCB footprint.

The complete design is shown with data for customer evaluation, with evaluation boards available from RS Components.

The design shows FS1404-3300-AS (4A) for 12Vin to 3.3Vout. Other devices:  FS1406 (6A) and FS1403 (3A) Note:  I2C is optional.  The device can operate in analog DC-DC mode.  For additional designs see www.tdk.com/POL see Power Users Guides.

The design shown delivers a 13W 3.3Vout solution (12Vin) using a 3.3mm x 3.3mm x 1.5mm height power module with an integrated thin-film inductor.  Only 2 x 22uF capacitors needed for a low BoM component count.   90% efficiency in the total design space of 7mm x 7mm.

With only 2 x 22uF load caps, the FS1404 delivered +/-20mV pp (+/- 0.6%) transients from 0A to 4A step load.

The design also showed excellent thermal performance without airflow as the module is rated from -40C to +125C with excellent thermal deratings.
