Contributing to the creation of “Connected Factories” through the spread of IoT and Industry 4.0 FX23

Connectors are generally categorized into Board-to-Board or Board-to-Wire.

For Board-to-Board connectors, trying to transmit hundreds or thousands of signals between boards can result in breakage of connectors during mating. This is due to mounting multiple rigid connectors on the board.

There are 2 problems in the production process. High accuracy for making molding dies and equipment are required when producing super high-pin-count components as mechanical parts. Additionally, during the mass production process, the defective rate tends to rise and cost doesn’t match market needs.

Floating Board-to-Board connectors, which absorb alignment errors of the X/Y axis, solve these problems instantly.

The FX23 series by Hirose is a Floating Board-to-Board connector which not only can solve these structural problems but also has good high-speed transmission characteristics. Additionally, FX23 has both signal and power contacts.

FX23 was first selected (in 2014) to be used in supercomputer and network servers at American research institutes since it allows signal transmission for the 100-300pin range between boards by using multiple FX23 connectors.

After that, FX23 was also used in 5G base transmission stations. Use of FX23 then expanded to automobile, vehicle, mobility, factory automation equipment, and machine tools because it prevents electrical interruption by vibration or shock.

As IoT and Industry 4.0 spreads and the creation of “Connected Factories” increases rapidly, the latest industrial machines require high-speed transmission from 5 to 10Gbps.

It is difficult to make a connector which has both the function of floating and high-speed transmission at the same time. However, FX23 by Hirose achieves these and 8Gbps.
