2022 marked the 20th anniversary of Cardiff Racing, Cardiff University’s Formula Student Team, and they were proud to unveil their latest and greatest Formula Student Car – CR19, or as it’s known by the team - Elliot.

Powered by a modified Triumph 675 Street Triple, CR19 is fuelled on E85 and packs a mean 102BHP punch! Following in Cardiff Racing tradition, CR19 retains the team’s staple hybrid chassis of an aluminium honeycomb monocoque and a rear steel subframe. With a new carbon fibre aerodynamics package optimised for both durability and performance and a newly optimised suspension package, CR19 is just as comfortable taking on tight corners as it is open straights.

Unleashed at Formula Student UK 2022, CR19 and the team competed admirably, achieving fifth place overall at the competition – a great success for the team. For the second year running Cardiff Racing achieved first place at the acceleration event, with a blisteringly quick run of 4.175 seconds.

While unfortunately, CR19 did not finish the endurance event, fifth position overall at the competition was still a fantastic achievement of which the team are very proud of.

Following Formula Student UK, Cardiff Racing was invited to the Bugatti Trust’s Prescott Hill Climb event in September, where they had the opportunity to do a number of procession runs up the hill. While this was an incredibly enjoyable experience, it was also a fantastic opportunity to see and understand a large number of different design choices on the incredibly impressive competing cars, helping to inspire design choices for future cars.

After the summer, CR19 returned home to Cardiff University’s School of Engineering, where it has been undergoing a series of post-season testing, helping to guide the design for Cardiff Racing’s upcoming car – CR20.

Cardiff Racing would like to thank RS Grass Roots for their help with producing such a fantastic car – without the funding from the Build Fund, CR19 would not have been the success that it was. Through the Build Fund, Cardiff Racing was able to procure a large number of electrical components to manufacture our electrical loom, consumables for composite working and a selection of hand tools. We look forward to working together again in the future.

Cardiff Racing is the Formula Student team representing Cardiff University. Consisting of members from various degree disciplines and years, we compete in FSUK every year, as well as other Formula Student competitions across Europe. The team has seen great success - including becoming the first British team to win FSUK in 2017 - and the competitive atmosphere drives learning and innovation across all areas of the car design and build.
