Autoranging power supplies are designed to provide a greater range of operation than a conventional rectangular power supply. A conventional PSU has a fixed current limit giving a power capability that reduces directly with the output voltage.
The TTi PowerFlex design of the Aim-TTi CPX and QPX series enables higher currents to be generated at lower voltages within an overall power limit envelope. Each output can provide considerably higher current than a conventional PSU of the same maximum voltage and power (see power curve). PowerFlex models have an extended range that provides a ratio of up to 8 x Max current against that achievable at Max Voltage.

Often Autorange power supplies are associated with simple switched supplies. The Aim-TTi CPX models operate a modified form of Mixed-Mode regulation. This technique uses a switch-mode pre-regulation and linear final regulation. This technique combines exceptional efficiency with noise levels that are close to that of a pure linear power supply. PowerFlex+ regulation on the QPX models uses a multi-phase conversion technique to eliminate the need for a linear final stage, to allow an even wider autorange combination. The QPX models can provide ranges of up to 80V and 80A within a 600W power envelope.
The improved noise and regulation performance of PowerFlex supplies has enabled customers to utilise a single compact power supply for a wide range of development and test requirements. Enabling standardisation within test systems and reduced test system size.
