Aerodynamic design
The plastic impeller of the 2200F series fan allows the integration of complex geometry which was not available previously with an impeller manufactured in metal. Lessons learned using computational fluid dynamic software can be exploited for large quantity serial production, improving energy efficient aerodynamic design at a commercially acceptable price.
Winglets
Initially discovered by the aeronautical industry, the air passing over a wing at the tips creates vortices consuming useful energy from the work it is designed to do. This effect is also a source of noise.
By introducing winglets at the tips of the wings It was found that the strength of the vortices was reduced, improving the wing efficiency and lowering the overall noise level.
A compact axial fan works on the same principles of an aircraft wing, however, instead of producing lift it produces airflow. As with the impeller in the picture above, the 2200F has 5 blades that rotate at high speed to deliver high volume flow rates at higher pressures. Each blade, designed for optimum conversion of rotational energy into airflow, has a winglet on its periphery. The addition of the winglet ensures that the maximum surface area of the impeller blades is producing useful work whilst minimising the sound pressure level coming from the fan.
Intelligent Motor Technology
At the heart of the 2200 series S-Force fan is a permanent magnet, brushless DC, electronically commutated motor. This type of motor combines the high speed and high efficiency of a permanent magnet motor with brushless electronic commutation for long life expectancy. The motor design uses three magnetic cores which produce smooth rotation throughout the speed control range. Using brushless electronics to commutate the motor also provides extra functionality such as onboard speed control and rotational speed feedback.
Speed control can be achieved by providing an open collector PWM signal or 0-10V analogue input. Speed feedback is produced by a tacho signal output, also open collector.
These signals can be sent and interpreted using Programmable Logic Controllers (PLC’s), or via a range of simpler control devices, configurable to meet the specific needs of your application.
Compatible Speed Control Devices
Also available from RS Components are compatible controllers that can provide:
- Variable output signal based on temperature
- Variable output signal based on an analogue input signal (0-10V to PWM conversion)
The CEC (0-10V output) and CPC (0-100% PWM output) are controllers that are configured with fixed temperature profiles that regulate the fan speed based on ambient temperature. The temperature is fed to the controller using a negative temperature coefficient thermistor which is supplied with the controller.
