Light is all around us. It is everywhere we go. Be it luminaires or appliances. Simply for the purpose of lighting up or accentuate a structure. Signalling that a road may be crossed safely, an ambulance is approaching or marking the runway for planes. From enhancing our well-being and health, to cultivating plants.

Today I would like to highlight the Osram OS OSCONIQ S 3030 named a Silver Winner of the 2020 Edison Awards.

What makes the OSCONIQ S 3030 so special?

Well, these professional LEDs powered by quantum dot technology are quickly changing the general lighting industry with their outstanding quality, even at high colour rendering indexes.

The white mid-power LED features a unique quantum dot technology with a narrow band red emission. Its high spectral purity enables excellent light quality with a minimum CRI of 90, while delivering record-breaking efficacy (lm/W). Whether they’re used in shops, homes, industrial sites, or at the office, OSCONIQ LEDs are characterized by long lifetime, high performance and best-in-class reliability and are specially developed for area lighting and downlight applications.

What are Quantum Dots?

Quantum Dots are nanometer-sized semiconductor particles that are about 10,000 times smaller than the diameter of a human hair. Due to their size, quantum mechanical effects become dominant in these structures. These nanoparticles emit light of a specific wavelength if blue LED pump light is applied to them and this wavelength (color) depends on the size of the Quantum Dots. For instance, 2 nanometer Quantum Dots produce blue light, whereas 7 nanometer sized particles emit red.

How do they affect LED light solutions?

Quantum Dots on LEDs promise to change the display and lighting industries by replacing broad-emitting, bulky phosphors through efficient nano-sized particles, resulting in higher efficiency and better colour for displays and lighting. Quantum Dots exhibit narrow band emission spectra which can be precisely tuned by changing their size. These narrow band Quantum Dots converters show potential for a large number of LED applications. In particular, they can be used to significantly improve the conversion efficiency of white LEDs for General Lighting. Quantum Dots enable high-color rendering and very energy-efficient LED components for the next generation of lighting applications.
