The HKUST Remotely Operated Vehicle (ROV) Team made history by winning the All-Around Champion and Safety Conscious Award in the MATE International ROV Competition 2017 which was held on June 23-25 in Long Beach, California, US. This is the first time for a Hong Kong team as well as an Asian team to receive the championship in this international competition over the past 16 years and it is also the best-ever result achieved by the ROV Team.

A sub-team of HKUST Robotics Team, the ROV Team previously defended the 7th consecutive championship in the Hong Kong Regional of the MATE International ROV Competition in April. The team then represented Hong Kong to take part in the international competition and achieved a record-breaking result. The team consists of 15 engineering undergraduates from various disciplines and most of them are in Year 1 and Year 2.

The annual MATE International ROV Competition attracted strong teams across different regions of the world. This year, 25 winning teams in regional contests from US, Canada, UK, Russia, Saudi Arabia, Egypt, Turkey, Norway, India, Mexico and Hong Kong advanced to the competition. With the theme of “Port Cities of the Future: Commerce, Entertainment, Health, and Safety”, the competition highlights the role that ROVs will play in streamlining commerce, maintaining entertainment, and ensuring both health and safety of port cities of the future. It challenged students to think as entrepreneurs and the teams competed not only for robot missions, but also for market display, presentation and technical report.

Engineering students are encouraged to take part in a variety of external competitions such as the Robocon Hong Kong Contest outside their regular curriculum, where they can apply what they learn, develop skills in various aspects, and widen their global perspectives. One such popular external competition is the Robocon Hong Kong Contest since 2004. To benefit more students from the new learning experience, the Robocon Team, now called the HKUST Robotics Team, has been expanded in 2010. The Robotics Team members will represent the HKUST to participate in major events namely the Robocon Contest, the Remotely Operated Vehicles (ROV) competition, the Smart Car Competition and the NAO RoboCup. Besides robotics competition, the Robotics team would like to encourage students to explore in other areas. We have also taken part in various of presentation competitions and entrepreneur competitions in order to encourage students to become excellent leaders.
