SCANIFY - the fast, affordable handheld 3D scanner

title

SCANIFY is an affordable handheld 3D scanner that delivers fast, high-resolution shape and color capture for a range of 3D modeling applications, such as 3D printing, as well as on-screen applications like 3D art, animation and game development.

The scanner excels in the capture of 3D models of:

  • The human form
  • Fabrics
  • Plants, leaves
  • Stone, masonry, brick
  • Textured paintings, statues, wood carvings, clay sculptures
  • Other high-texture surfaces.

SCANIFY is groundbreaking in three key ways:

  • Speed: SCANIFY is the world’s first 3D scanner to combine pre-calibrated stereo cameras with photometric imaging to capture a 3D image in a tenth of a second. This rapid speed of capture gives SCANIFY a unique ability to scan subjects that may move during capture.
  • Ease of Use: SCANIFY mimics the intuitive point-and-shoot technology of digital cameras while delivering fast, high-resolution shape and color capture for a range of 3D modeling applications like 3D printing and 3D animation.
  • Affordability: Priced at $1,490.00 (excluding tax), SCANIFY is less than one tenth the cost of professional handheld 3D scanning systems that capture a similar level of detail (i.e. color detail down to 350 microns).

How it works

When taking an image, SCANIFY rapidly acquires a series of stereoscopic 2D photographs with several lighting directions. These are then processed by software to resolve a single 3D model. Under the hood, the scanner combines a number of image processing technologies to allow on-the-spot acquisition of high-quality 3D models:

  • High speed capture enables scanning of objects that may move during acquisition
  • Movement compensation is used to account for the movement of the scanner as it is being held during a scan
  • Photometric-stereo is used to acquire color and high-resolution 3D detail from the subject
  • Stereoscopic imaging is used to acquire accurate underlying 3D shape information from the subject
  • Data fusion is performed to combine the data output of the photometric and geometric processes to produce a single 3D image.

About Fuel3D

Fuel3D® is a developer of advanced 3D scanning systems and solutions. Originally developed for the medical imaging sector, the Fuel3D technology has been adapted for the broader 3D market, with the goal of bringing the benefits of point-and-shoot 3D imaging to consumers, professionals and businesses.

Fuel3D is the company behind SCANIFY®, a handheld, point-and-shoot 3D-scanner built to enable consumers and professionals to 3D scan objects in high-resolution shape and color in a tenth of a second.

Oxford origins

The company’s story began in a lab at Oxford University, where Professor Ron Daniel and one of his doctoral students realized that they might be able to create something that was both innovative and commercial using 3D imaging technology. They set up a spin-out company in 2007 and the journey has had many twists and turns since then.

The initial direction of the company followed the concept of using 3D photography to address the challenge of measuring and assessing the healing of chronic wounds.

After achieving success with the wound measurement system, which is now in use in hospitals and universities across the UK, Europe and Australia, the company looked to explore how the technology might be applicable in other markets.

In early 2013, and after observing rapid growth in the global 3D printing market, Stuart Mead, Fuel3D’s new CEO, sought to explore the potential of the company’s technology to help solve 3D printing’s content creation challenge.

Crowdfunding success

In August 2013, Fuel3D launched a crowdfunding campaign on Kickstarter. The initial target was to raise $75,000 during the 30-day campaign period, but it was so successful it reached this target in 36 hours. At the end of the 30-day period, the company had raised $325,000 in pre-orders for the scanner.

Since the crowdfunding campaign, the company has gone from strength to strength, raising millions in private investment and signing retail and distribution partners across the world. In January 2015, the company unveiled SCANIFY at the CES tradeshow in Las Vegas. At CES, the company won the CES Best of Innovation Award in the 3D Printing & Additive Manufacturing category.
