Hello there fellow mac users! i managed to get the legendary Design Spark PCB running on a mac so i thought i would tell u guys how to do this to!

First you gotta download crossover and the latest Design Spark PCB installer for windows

What is crossover i hear you say? well, crossover is a program on the mac that lets you install windows programs on a mac by making them think they are running on a windows machine, its a very clever application however it is not free, it costs £38 (with a years worth of support for it) or £25 (with a months worth of support) last i checked (i used the trial to install mine) but in my opinion for an application like design spark pcb and the ability to install most windows applications, its worth it!

Make a folder on your desktop called "Design Spark" and put inside it the Design Spark PCB installer for windows

Also inside the folder you just made make another folder called "Support Files"

Now open crossover and you should get this screen

title

Select "Install Windows Software"

Then you should get this windows pop up

title

Type in the search bar at the top "design spark", it won't be able to find anything

Select the "Other Application" option and then "Proceed" you should then get this window

title

Select "Choose Installer File..." and then in the window that opens locate the design spark installer you downoaded earlier and click "Use This Installer" you should now see a window like this

title

Now Click "Install"

After a few seconds the installer will now open like when you run it on a windows computer

Accept the terms and conditions and fill in your user name and company name (if you dont have a company name you can put anything or just N/A)

Now when you see a screen like this

title

Click "Browse..." and then in the window that opens select the folder on your desktop labled "Design Spark"

This window is a little different to the normal mac one but the folder labled "My Mac Desktop" is you desktop even though its named differently

Click "Next"

Now in the next installer window click "Browse..." again but this time select the folder "Support Files" inside the folder "Design Spark" on your desktop

title

Click "Next" and then "Next" again and the installer should begin its installation of Design Spark PCB

title

And when its done...

title

Now the installers finished, uncheck the "Launch the application now" checkbox and then click "Finish"

Now here comes the fun bit, in crossover select from the menu bar "Programs > Design Spark > Design Spark PCB Data" this will open whats called the "Wine Explorer" now using the file tree on the left of the window select the file "Design Spark" which is on your desktop

title

Now if you click the bar at the top which should say "DesignSpark" in it, it will change to the file location, copy this using Cmd + C

title

Now go back to Crossover, quit crossover and launch it again and on the welcome screen it gives you now select "Run Installed Software"

Now select "Design Spark PCB.app" from the Finder window that opens and you should get the error "Download Support Data"

title

Now change "http://designspark.eu/data/" to whatever you copied from wine and then click "OK"

DesignSpark PCB should now ask about updating, click "Yes" and then "Ok"

Congradulations! you have now successfully installed Design Spark PCB on a Mac using Crossover, all you have to do now is activate the software like normal and you can then start using Design Spark PCB, to open Design Spark PCB again once you have quitted it just open Crossover > "Run Installed Software" > DesignSpark PCB.app

WARNING! RUNNING DESIGN SPARK PCB ON A MAC CAN BE TEMPERMENTAL AT TIMES, MAKE SURE YOU SAVE REGUARLY BECAUSE IF DESIGN SPARK CRASHES YOU WILL LOSE YOUR WORK IF IT HAS NOT BEEN SAVED, I, RS AND ANY OTHER RELATED PARTNERS/ASSOSIATIONS CANNOT BE HELD RESPONSIBLE FOR LOST WORK DUE TO UNSAVED FILES OR DUE TO SOFTWARE CRASHES

And Just To Prove It Does Run On A Mac

THANKS ALL FOR READING THIS TUTORIAL!!!! Any questions about anything mensioned or any issues just ask!

I'm using OSX 10.8.5 (Mountain Lion), and it's a Windows 7 bottle. I can't even get as far as opening a new project, so haven't been able to test the support data. It's really a bit frustrating, it's like having the keys to a new car without having any fuel in the tank!

I got the same problem with the Support data i.e. the "Wine" window closes after a second of opening. The problem with this is that none of the libraries exist for components because it doesn't know where to find the files. May I ask what OS you installed on? And also what "bottle" you used in Crossover?

Designspark 6 and Crossover 13 don't play nicely. Anything that requires a Open or Save dialog box doesn't work. For example, when you browse to a new directory to save a new project, when you click on the "Save" button, the dialog disappears as expected, but nothing happens. No new files are created, and the project doesn't exist.

Likewise when you try and open an existing project or file: when you click on "Open"

Designspark 5 does the same thing, but Designspark 4 works fine.

    hey mate

sorry but i never got that problem, if you didn't get the support data issue then it should be fine though, you can't delete the folder as crossover does use those files but i would say u can move it to wherever u want (applications?)

and stay tuned! new tutorial coming out for making designspark run on mac without crossover!

    Thanks for a great tutorial.

When I got to the stage of copying the filepath, the wine explorer opened for a second and then disappeared. Did you ever have this issue? However, I did not get the "Download Support Data" error and everything seems to be working fine, so I presume that's ok!

Can I delete the folder from my 'normal' mac desktop now? I get the impression that Crossover has taken the files elsewhere?

    Thanks.
