hackUST - The 2nd edition of the biggest student-led Hackathon in Hong Kong

title

title hackUST (ust.hack.hk) is over and the event was an overwhelming success, with numerous sponsors, alumni, industry guests and HKUST leaders dropping by our event. HackUST is a student-led Hackathon of the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (HKUST), where students from all over Hong Kong pitch their ideas, connect and form teams. Then they have 24-hours’ time to implement their very first prototype.

The event was beyond our expectations. The goal was to attract 150 participants from various universities in HK. But the response was overwhelming! We hosted over 230 participants, with more than 50 students coming from 4 other universities.

Another goal was to get a more diverse range of products/ hacks. Last year, we mainly had mobile app developments, but through various pre-hackathon workshops such as the Arduino workshop and the DesignSpark Mechanical workshop, which was sponsored and co-organized by RS Components, we had apps that not only focused on software, but also on hardware.

In fact, the winner of the Tencent Foundation's Best Developer Prize of 10,000 HKD went to Team Efemel , who built a low cost digital pen using the Arduino . As the Arduino is perfect for fast development, they could create their first prototype within only 24 hours. Their vision is to enable more people to create online lectures such as those of the Khan Academy, by lowering the cost.

The CSE E-Club has already a few (crazy) ideas for the next year hackUST. So stay tuned for our next Hackathon@HKUST!
