DesignSpark Mechanical Workshop in Republic Polytechnic

On the 28th of January, RS Components gave students and lecturers in Republic Polytechnic this workshop on the DesignSpark Mechanical software. Republic Polytechnic is RS University’s first partner university. The workshop began with an introduction on what RS is about.

DesignSpark Mechanical was a highly intuitive 3D design and visualization platform that Allied Electronics and RS Components have offered for free. Furthermore, RS Components has recently launched the DesignSpark Mechanical Version 2.

The students and lecturers in Republic Polytechnic got the chance to meet the team and discuss their specific requirements. And they also discovered the wide range of products that RS has. Most importantly, they learned resources provided by DesignSpark.

Eugene Tham is a senior Academic Staff at Republic Polytechnic. Eugene has been teaching PCB modules for a few years and is familiar with various EDA software. Being one of the pioneers in Singapore at using DesignSpark PCB, Eugene has been advocating its use for projects, competitions, and curriculum. Just recently he has been interested in 3D modelling, and so he started learning how to use DesignSpark Mechanical. On top of that, he recently purchased 2 types of 3D printers from RS Components, RepRapPro Ormerod 3D Printer and the Cube printer. With DesignSpark Mechanical, he is able to export an STL file and print out his 3D model any time!

At the end of this 3 hours workshop, everyone was able to familiarise with the user interface and the basic functions for creating a 3D model of their own. The DesignSpark Mechanical is a reliable software and is suitable for beginners to start with. Plus, it’s free! And it comes with an online library ready to be imported into your design if you so ever need it.

Final Thoughts

Based on my experience, I have found DesignSpark Mechanical to be a simple and effective tool for envision my concepts and design. Especially for beginners like me who have no experience in using any 3D modelling software, I found the user interface for DesignSpark Mechanical user-friendly and gesture based. The 3D component libraries are substantial, BOMs and quotes are easy to generate, and it’s free. Looking at all of these benefits, I found that there is a lot to gain from DesignSpark Mechanical.
