DesignSpark Mechanical: Video Review by Ben Satterwhite

One evening I was browsing YouTube and came across this user video review of DesignSpark Mechanical. It really stood out for me as the style is very 'laid back'. Don't be misleaded: the review is very informative. It's made by a chap called Ben Satterwhite. After a bit of digging I also found Ben's website. He is an intependent technical blogger and technology guru. I will list links to both his YouTube channel and his website in the bottom of this page. So the review starts with a lot of excitement:

"I'm really excited about it (...) How often do you get something of real value and have it totally free? Something you can use and make money with!?"

Ben goes through the very basics in DesignSpark Mechanical. Hell, he does not even start a design! Yet he does show a solid he created earlier and gives it a bit of rotation. While doing that, he also talks a lot of sense about what goes around the software. It's clear to me that Ben is an experienced Engineer and beyond doubt a credible reviewer of this Engineering tool. The main points he covers:

  • who are the target users DesignSpark Mechanical aims for
  • how DesignSpark Mechanical compares with the expensive CAD software (tools mentioned: SolidWorks, AutoDesk Inventor)
  • why DesignSpark Mechanical is useful for Electronics Design Engineers
  • AutoCad DXF export is discussed with special attention
  • 3D printing STL output
  • Quick guide to adding 3D Models from DesignSpark 3D CAD library

"They actually have a lot of pre-made parts, so you can start dropping in fans and things like that (...) I recommend you guys check it out, I think it's really good! It's free. I mean, who can complain about free??"

Here is the DesignSpark Mechanical video review by Ben Satterwhite, an independent blogger and technology guru:

Towards the end of his video Ben mentions that he knows of the DesignSpark PCB software and is going to make another video review dedicated to it. I could not find this DSPCB video review on his channel though, so I'm thinking I should try to get in touch and ask about it. Would you like to listen to Ben's DesignSpark PCB video review?
